From the Helm January 2018

Welcome to 2018!

In January of 2017 in my “From the Helm” message, I stated that “2017 is going to be busy with a number of events”, and that statement was fulfilled with 10 events, and 2018 is a new year beginning with a lot of winter events.

As I write these words, the wind is howling from the north and the forecast for the next week here in Oklahoma is for the temperatures to be at or below the freezing mark for daily highs. But don’t let that keep you from boating; maybe not on the water, but on the land in temperature controlled environments. These winter events are great opportunities to interact with like-minded people and enjoy each other’s company as well as the boats.

Kansas City Boat Show

Planning is already underway for 2018 with the Kansas City Boat and Sport Show January 18th thru the 21st. Forrest Bryant is once again coordinating participation by Heartland Classics members to display boating history in the midst of the latest boating technology. So, give Forrest a call and let him know of your plans to participate.

Oklahoma City Boat Show

Heartland Classics will again participate in the Oklahoma City Boat Show January 26th thru the 28th. Buddy Butler is coordinating our third year of participation at this show. I encourage everyone in the Oklahoma area to give Buddy a call and he can give you details on when to arrive with your boat. Let’s make a strong showing this year.

Heartland Classics Workshop

Mark your calendar for our annual Workshop on February 10th at Brent Howard’s “heated” shop in Langley Oklahoma. Once again event chairman Dan Diehl is putting together an interesting and educational agenda. So, invite friends that may not be a part of Heartland Classics, but have an interest in classic boating, to register and join us to meet others and find out more about the fun we have and the activities we promote, use our boats in various cruises,  and how we provide education as to how to restore and maintain older boats.

Come join others while we look forward to increasing temperatures that will allow us to get back on the water with the wind on our faces.

Let me close by encouraging everyone to start planning now and consider attending the annual ACBS meeting and international boat show this year in September. Heartland Classics has had a sizeable group attend the last two years, but we welcome as many others as can possibly make it. This year’s event will be held at Port Huron, Michigan September 12 – 15, 2018 with pre-event boating activities starting on September 9, 2018. The annual meeting is Thursday September 13th with the boat show on Friday and Saturday September 14th and 15th.  As part of the meeting dates, there will be tours of the Historic Algonac area. See “Where It All Began”… the home of Christopher Smith and Gar Wood, Algonac Cast Products, the original Chris Craft boat building facility and more!

More details and hotel options can be found on the ACBS website.

Hope to see ya’ soon!
